Search Specific Publications in Nexis Uni

Open How to Search Nexis Uni

in another browser window to work through this tutorial side by side.

Tutorial Scope

Nexis Uni (Lexis-Nexis), contains published news, law, and business information.

This tutorial addresses general news searching, and how to search within specific publications.

To access this database from the libraries homepage, click on the Databases link in the center of page menu, and then click on the letter "N" in the alphabet index at the top of the database list page. Finally, select "Nexis Uni".

For now just use the database in the open browser window.

Move Directly to Advanced Searching

Nexis Uni is a "full text" index.  This means that all the words in a document are indexed, and not just title, abstract, and subject heading words.

Because of this, a seemingly simple search will retrieve many documents that are not relevant to the information being sought.

To search more precisely use "Advanced Search" by clicking on the link directly below "All Nexis Uni" on the left side of the search box:

Boolean Searching via Menu Options

Using various search options, you can specify different relationships between the words you are searching.

Use "Term connectors" in the search dialog boxes to increase the precision of a search.

Explanation of the various connectors and fields is found under Definitions & Help on the right side of the search dialog boxes.

Because the full text of documents are being searched, using connectors to specify search term locations and relationships improves the precision of a search query.
