Colgate Libraries Homepage

That people don't read web pages, but rather scan them, is well known.

This guide briefly and systematically describes resources and services available within the libraries' website, and explains how to access them from the website homepage.

The Primary Search Box

The large search dialog box at the upper center of the page (Search for Books, Articles and More) is a "mini-google" search of library provided information resources.

Colgate subscribes to many different kinds of information resources.

The indexes of most of those resources are combined into a single index.

This makes it possible to search many resources in a single place.

Second Tier Menu Options

Directly below the Primary Search Box are four other library resources and services:

  • Databases - A directory of library supported citation and full-text databases that cover many subjects

  • Journal Finder - A tool for identifying and accessing journals that are available to Colgate University

  • Course Reserves - Access to required reading materials for different courses

  • Inter Library Loan (ILL) - A service for requesting and receiving books and journal articles that are not readily available at Colgate

Third Tier Menu Options

Resources and services here include:
  • Course & Subject Guides: Librarians develop Subject Guides to facilitate identifying which resources to explore for different subjects and interests.  Course Guides are specific to individual courses to assist students in finding course relevant information resources.
  • Special Collections & University Archives: Connects to the SCUA website for accessing rare book and institutional history resources found there.

Top Tier Resources

The resources in the red-lettered menu bar at the top of the page include:
  • Home: This link reloads the home-page. Unfortunately no treats are dispensed when one  clicks on the link.
  • About: A webpage with information about Library hours, staff, library policies, borrowing rules, and other resources.
  • Research: links to commonly used resources that are unique as well as some redundant links to homepage resources.
  • Services: A potpourri of services that are not easily categorized.
  • Ask a Librarian: Use this link to make arrangements to contact a librarian in a number of different ways.
